kurs

Today, we’d like to introduce kurs, a bakery located just east of Nijo Castle.
Open from 7:00 AM, it’s a beloved local favorite—and there’s often a line no matter when you visit. Every time I walk past, the warm scent of freshly baked bread floats through the air, and I can’t help but wander inside.

Inside, breads and pastries are neatly lined up in a display case. You simply take a tray, choose what you’d like, and the staff will pick the items for you. From classics like scones, croissants, and ham sandwiches to many unique items with unfamiliar names, it’s the kind of place that makes you think, “What should I try today?”—and even choosing is part of the fun.

My top recommendation is the croissant. It’s impressively large compared to most bakeries. The outside is crisp and fragrant, while the inside is light and fluffy. One bite and the buttery aroma fills your mouth—deeply satisfying. Thanks to its generous size, one croissant can easily keep you full for breakfast.

If you go in the afternoon, many items are often sold out, with only a few basics like loaf bread left. If you have something specific in mind, we recommend visiting in the morning. Some items may also be available for reservation, so please check the bakery’s official Instagram for the latest updates.

Please note that cash payment only is accepted, so it’s a good idea to come prepared.

It’s about a 10-minute walk from Kishotei—perfect for a morning stroll. Why not stop by and pick up some freshly baked bread to start your day?
