A Must-Visit Spot in the Nijo Castle Area
If you’re staying at Kyo Hotel Kishotei Goshominami, one place we truly recommend is Ebisugawa Gyoza Nakajima (Main Branch).
The shop is well-known for its glasses signed by celebrities, and it’s also a popular spot on social media. Another great point is how easy it is to get there—it’s about an 11-minute walk west from Kyo Hotel Kishotei Goshominami.
You’ll spot it right away thanks to the large noren curtain at the entrance. Inside, there are both table seats and counter seats, so it’s an easy place to drop by whether you’re dining alone or with a group.
Signature Dish: Gyoza
If you come here, the one thing you absolutely shouldn’t miss is their signature gyoza.
They’re perfectly browned and aromatic, bursting with juicy flavor—yet the finish is surprisingly light and refreshing. It’s easy to see why people say they’re “so good you can eat them endlessly.”
You can choose whether to include garlic or not, which is a nice touch depending on your plans for the next day. They also pair incredibly well with beer or a lemon sour, and before you know it, you’ll be reaching for another bite.
Speaking of drinks, their sours are topped with plenty of shaved-ice-like crunchy ice. That extra-cold, refreshing sip is a perfect match for gyoza.
A Main-Branch-Only Recommendation
They also have affiliated locations in Gion-Shijo and Saiin, but the menu varies slightly from store to store.
Here’s one item you can enjoy only at the main branch:
★ Tenshinhan (Curry Flavor)
You might think, “Curry… in Tenshinhan?”—but this is something we really recommend trying at least once. The combination of Chinese flavors and curry works surprisingly well, and it’s seriously addictive.
Fluffy egg topped with plenty of thick sauce—yet instead of a heavy curry roux, it’s a light Chinese-style curry sauce, so the dish stays balanced and enjoyable all the way to the last bite.
Sauna Lovers, Take Note
Recently, they’ve even opened a sauna facility called “Gyoza-yu 2” next door, making it possible to enjoy a unique experience:
relax in the sauna, then enjoy Chinese food afterward.
Since sauna use is by reservation only, be sure to book in advance through their website or by phone.
Final Thoughts
The writer has tried both dining in and takeout, but recommends eating at the restaurant to fully enjoy the variety of menu items and the atmosphere.
It’s perfect for a satisfying dinner after sightseeing, or as a casual second stop for drinks and light bites.
If you’re visiting Kyoto, definitely consider stopping by—once you go, you’ll likely want to return again.
